Instructions

1

Contact your lawyer. If you have an attorney that is handling your disability case, contact him for updates and to check the status.

2

Gather documents that you have received from Social Security, if any. Use your case number or other identification number to check the status of your disability case.

3

Call or visit your local Social Security office. Check the status of your disability case through the local office.

4

Log onto the Social Security Administration's website (ssa.gov). On the left hand side of the page, choose "Check the Status of Your Application." Enter your Social Security number and confirmation number to receive information about your disability case.

5

Call the toll-free Social Security number (ssa.gov; 800-772-1213). Ask for information regarding your case, but be aware that the Social Security and Disability Resource Center warns the service sometimes provides inaccurate information.

6

Speak to the disability examiner at the state agency that is processing your claim. In most states, the disability examiner works at the Disability Determination Services. The examiner is directly handling your claim and can tell you the status of your case.
