United States visas are available for business people, students, spouses of U.S. citizens and tourists. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) assigns a receipt number to each petition filed for a visa. The number assigned is mailed or emailed to the petitioner on an I-797, Notice of Action (NOA) form. The number is located in the top right of the form and is clearly marked as the receipt number. You will need that number to check the visa petition status online.

Instructions
1
Visit the USCIS website (uscis.gov). Scroll approximately half the way down the page. Under "After I File" on the right hand menu, click on "Check My Case Status."
2
Enter the case number from the NOA in the box provided in the center of the page. The words "Enter your receipt number" appear just above the box.
3
Click "Check Status" and the system will research your case. Between 1 and 9 filled-in circles will be displayed to the right indicating which stages of the processing your petition has cleared. The first one will always be highlighted as it indicates your petition was received and assigned a receipt number.
4
Click "Sign-up for Case Updates" in the menu on the top right to enable email notifications each time a new stage has been completed. Signing up will give you the benefit of seeing the last time your case was handled and provide you peace of mind during the longer stages of processing.
5
Call USCIS' National Customer Service Center (NCSC) if you have any additional questions about your case or if the case seems to be taking longer than designated processing timelines. This may initiate a review of the case and additional information.
