The United States is a high profile and desirable place to live and work. It is also the target of hostility and terrorism. So when you petition the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the United States government carefully reviews your application --- and there are many applications, which means the process is relatively slow. Waiting for an official response through the mail can take considerable time, though it is possible to check on the status of your immigration papers with the USCIS.

Instructions
1
Visit the USCIS website and research the menu of available immigrant visas (see Resources). Choose the one that is right for your situation. Immigrant visas include skilled worker visas, permanent residency through a sponsor inside the U.S. and immigrant visas available to refugees.
2
Print out the appropriate immigration petition and fill it out completely while gathering any required documents. These documents may include fingerprints, marriage licenses and proof of employment. Enclose the application, documents and a payment for the appropriate fees in the form of a money order to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to the appropriate lock-box facility.
3
Receive a notice of receipt with USCIS in the mail. The notice is proof that USCIS has received your petition, and it will detail a receipt number. Note the receipt number.
4
Visit the USCIS homepage. Type your receipt number into the tool bar on the left under "Case Status." Click the "Check Status" button underneath the receipt number entry portal to see the status of your petition with USCIS.
