Medi-Cal is a public health insurance program for low-income families in the state of California. It is similar to Medicaid in other states. There are four ways to apply for Medi-Cal. Apply for the Medi-Cal program by mail, telephone, in person or online for the county you reside in. Once the county receives your application, you should be contacted with the name and phone number of the worker you are assigned to.

Provide all requested information, such as proof of income, resources, identification, social security cards and birth-certificates for all applicants.

Contact your worker via telephone to ask if your application is approved. If you applied online, you may be able to check the status of your application via the Internet.

Contact your worker or local Medi-Cal office if a medical provider states that you are showing an ineligible status. It could be that you forgot to turn in a form or the county made an error that can be corrected within a couple of hours.

There are several Medi-Cal programs that you may get notifications for, as it is a requirement that the county screens you for all of these programs. These programs have different budgets and are paid for by different government departments.


Once approved for Medi-Cal you will receive a Benefits Identification Card (BIC). Providers use this card to verify the status of your Medi-Cal eligibility.


To check the status of a Treatment Authorization Request (TAR), contact the Medi-Cal office (916) 552-9100 for the TAR Office in your county.


Medi-Cal offices are often found within the county Department of Human Services or Public Social Services.
